The Forces of Nature - Introduction
In school we learned that there are four fundamental forces of nature: gravitation, the electromagnetic force, and the strong and weak nuclear forces. These four are the only forces that have been observed in nature, and they are well understood. The strong nuclear force is the strongest of the forces, followed by electromagnetism. The weak nuclear force is very weak, but it is still stronger than gravity, which is the weakest of them all. At the same time, the strong and weak nuclear forces operate only at the atomic level, while the electromagnetic force and gravity have an infinite range of influence.
